National Stationary Show in NYC

This week Jeff and I went to the National Stationary Show in NYC. Even though I've lived less than a half hour away for most of my life, I had never been to a convention at the Jacob Javitz Center before. Wow is it huge, we walked the floor the entire day and met some crazy talented people. I'm crazy excited to start incorporating the amazing stuff we found into the new shop and new project kits!

A few thoughts about the show:

  1. Letterpress is the hottest thing. There were lots of great letterpress artists doing totally unique things, it was awesome to walk around and check out all the different art. I can't wait to include some letterpress cards in upcoming project kits.
  2. I love that there's a Ladies of Letterpress collective. I'm a sucker for women getting together and forming co-ops to help each other out and carve out a real place for themselves.
  3. Journals & Notebooks. Good thing it wasn't a buying show; or I'd have definitely come home with at least 20 different notebooks. If you're a sucker for a good notebook (or 5); be on the lookout for a new section in the store this summer!
  4. Business Cards. Blew me away. They are like little works of art. Super thick papers, letterpressed, great artwork. I'm totally keeping all of them on a binder ring because they're just that cool. I'm not sure there's a better convention to find awesome, unique business cards.
  5. Brainstorm. I need all their artwork in my house. Right now. I first saw them at the Renegade Craft Fair in Brooklyn two summers ago and I've been in love ever since.

My New Work Routine

I'm always looking for new ways to boost my productivity. I want to be better today than I was yesterday. Part of being better is spending some time figuring out the best way to do tasks.

Confession: I'm like really sucking at getting tasks done lately. Like, they get done; but I'm not as happy with myself as I should be.

I can sit down and work on a project for several hours straight, but my biggest problem is that there are so many different things that I feel like I should be working on that I jump from project to project to project. Worse yet, I'll get distracted because I have to answer an email or a tweet and fall down a gaping BuzzFeed or Candy Crush Saga internet hole. .

I want to spend more time each day working on big projects and getting big things done. I want to make things happen. I have amazing plans in my head, and now its time to step up and execute these plans.

So I'm trying a few new things:

  • Each day of the week will have a specific category assigned to it (with one flex day). My plan is to spend 120 minutes each day working on those big projects.
  • I also came across this great blog post from Sarah Von Bargen, and I'll be implementing her 40 minutes a day strategy for branding and business.
  • And I have this crazy idea brewing in the back of my head for a wall mounted google calendar. Hopefully I can make this happen asap, it seems so cool in my head.

Let me know if I'm missing out on the golden key to productivity! What productivity methods are working for you right now? What isn't working for you?

DIY Gift Wrap

Use your craft stash to create the perfect wrapping paper for any occasion! I'm a huge fan of only buying plain/neutral rolls of gift wrap (or art paper like pictured here) for wrapping presents. I have everything I need to decorate my packages right in my craft stash. This is a great way to use up that extra washi tape, or those embellishments you have lying around.

I started out by wrapping my gift in white textured art paper (the kind that comes on a sheet at the art store) I like the feel of the textured paper and it gives the finished package a little bit more interested than if I would have just used smooth paper.

My first step was to grab my new Studio Calico neon mists and layer a couple of colors on top of one another for a cool splattered paint look.

The key to layering mists for splatter is to start with the color you want to see the most of. Open the bottle of mist and carefully hold the nozzle over the gift wrap and tap the top with your fingers a couple of times; drops should fall down. Experiment to create different sizes and splatter patterns. Once you're happy with that color, move onto the next mist and repeat the same steps as above, using about half the mist as you did the first time; repeat with more colors as necessary.

I added black and white polka dot washi both horizontally and vertically to mimic the traditional look of a present wrapped up with a bow. Instead of a bow, I added a chipboard star. I finished off the box with bold glitter thickers to really make my message stand out.

Tutorial: DIY Personalized iPhone Contact Photos

So excited! The A Beautiful Mess iPhone app came out last night. I'm a huge Elsie and Emma fan, so when I heard they were coming out with a photo app I knew I had to have it!

This app came out last night when I was laying in bed -- too tired to be doing anything else, but not tired enough to actually fall asleep. I started playing around with all the cool features -- borders, text, doodles and thought that these would make the best personalized photos for when people call my phone!

Design your very own contact photos for all your friends using the brand new A Beautiful Mess iPhone app. Designed by Elsie and Emma of A Beautiful Mess blog; this app lets you add awesome text and art to your photos. Modeled after the design style of A Beautiful Mess, the pictures come out both trendy and whimsical at the same time. I can't wait to use these pics in my project life spreads.

Follow the directions below to make your own awesome personalized iPhone contact photos for each of your friends!

Ladies Hating Ladies. Just Stop Already.

Today I wanted to talk about something that's been bouncing around in my mind for the past few weeks. Ladies hating ladies. It's totally unnecessary and does nothing productive for anyone.

Over the weekend this Huffington Post Home piece (http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2013/05/07/8-crafts-thatll-never-be-cool_n_3225621.html?ir=HuffPost+Home) was making the rounds on my social media networks; and people -- especially scrappers --  were understandably upset. What was the point of the article? What was the author thinking when she wrote it? Who was the audience she was trying to reach?

It seemed like she was just trying to use her power as a writer for a large online magazine to be a bully. The writer wasn't just an unpaid intern at HuffPo either, she is the Senior Editor of the Style and Home verticals and has made many media appearances.  By writing an article where the sole purpose is to inform readers that certain activities are 'cool' or 'not cool', she tries to position herself as an arbiter of cool and judge of women. I'm just not cool with that. There are plenty of things to write about without resorting to straight up hating on what other people are doing.

Here's what I'm thinking. If we' re going to pile onto each other and try to achieve success by stepping on other women and pushing other women to the bottom, then the highest level of success that we can hope to achieve is to stand on a pile of women who are broken; and I don't think that's anything to aspire to. Remember that our mothers, grandmothers, sisters, and daughters are in that pile too.

We do good when we work together. We do great things when we add up the sum of everyone's greatness. We cannot do those great things when all we are trying to do is exploit each other's weaknesses.

We can all be great at the same time. This isn't a zero-sum game. We no longer live in a society where women only succeed at the expense of other women. Just because one woman achieves success does not mean that another woman cannot succeed in the same place.

So why are we doing this to each other? We all went through the same shit in middle school and high school.  Everyone was bullied...even the bullies were bullied. And we hated it! So why are we doing it again now? We don't have to! We all have our own ways in which we can succeed and be great without shooting down other people. Just because something is great, doesn't mean that something else sucks.

I think these sentiments ring true throughout our lives, but are especially relevant to those of us who are scrapbookers, memory-keepers, or life-documenters. We are doing our best to try to tell the story of our lives. Everyone's life is different, so everyone's story is also different. We need to embrace those differences and learn from the stories of our friends.

We need to realize how hard it is to create art based on our life story - to learn to look at your life through an introspective lens.  On top of that, we then share that creation with other people. It can leave you very vulnerable. So lets come together and make it easier to tell our stories. Let's make it easier to tell our stories to ourselves and lets make it easier to tell our stories to each other.

I'd like to make a request. Let's chill with the hate. Let's work toward creating a positive atmosphere, not just for us, but for all the women we love. I'd like everyone to take a second and think about whether the things they're saying and doing contribute to this culture of ladies hating on ladies. Let's try something different. Let's see what we can do together.

Let's lift each other up instead of knocking each other down. There is room for everyone at the top and I promise that we'll all have a better time getting there if we work together.

5 Tips for Writing Long Blog Posts

Whether its a formal essay or an extended blog-post, long form writing can be incredibly daunting; here are 5 tips for making those long blog posts a bit more manageable.

1. Decide the whole of what you want to say, and sum it up in one sentence. Think of it as your thesis statement for your blog-post. Start by stating your main topic, and what about that topic is important/relevant to you.

2. Write an outline. Pick out the major important points that you want to hit on in your post. Write them down in list form with a bunch of room in between each one. Don't worry about grammar or fully formed sentences at this point, you're just trying to get the big picture out on paper. The goal is to be able to see on paper what you have envisioned in your head. Tip: Sometimes I write my outlines using post-it notes so I can switch ideas around easily.

3. Expand outward from your outline. Start adding in the details; indicate where you're going to add photos and links. Take each main point and expand your outline to full paragraphs. Go one point at a time and make sure each point makes sense individually before trying to tie them together. Use the last sentence of each point to lead into your next point.

4. Have someone else edit. Find someone who is willing to give your post a quick edit. They should let you know of any glaring grammar or spelling errors, but what you're looking for most is to find out if your post is readable. Does it flow well? Were they confused at any point in your post? Is there anything you should go back and clarify? Remember that you always have the final say, so if you don't like the edits you can always change them back.

5. Leave it alone overnight. Give yourself a day and then make the final edits. Read over the entire post in your head (or out loud). I've always found that after leaving it for a day, when I know the content is sound, I can fully concentrate on making the wording sound as good as possible. Make any final changes to your post and then publish!
